As a Junior High teacher, I wanted my students to be informed and engaged citizens. Listening to the news often left them feeling overwhelmed, depressed and stuck with no idea as to how they could make a difference. Determined to motivate my students to get involved in creating positive change and to show them a different perspective on the world; I packed my bags and went travelling.
Nine countries. Seven months. Dozens of stories! Positive stories of inspiring individuals who were using creative and innovative solutions to make their communities better whether they lived in Columbia, Rwanda, Pakistan or Iran. As I explored the world, sharing my stories, I realized there was a great hunger for positive news. Soon, more than 10,000 people were following my adventures on line. Some started asking for stories from right here in Canada.
Another travel idea was born. I would visit each province and territory; seeking out their untold stories. With support from imagination 150 my partner Leor and I spent six months exploring Canada, showcasing some amazing Canadians. ImagiNation 150 is a Calgary based non-profit that is using the sesquicentennial in 2017 to engage Canadians in conversations about the future they want for our country and what each individual can contribute towards that goal.
In the coming weeks, we will be showcasing some of the folks we met and sharing their vision for the future of Canada. I hope you’ll enjoy them as much as Leor and I did.
