Martin Parnell & Kate McKenzie running in Afghanistan and being filmed by Colin Scheyen as part of The Secret Marathon documentary film.

I ran my first marathon in Afghanistan but that wasn’t where I felt the most scared while running, it was in Canada. No one should have to feel scared when they run so we’re launching a race to celebrate everyone’s right to be free to run and we need your help to make it happen.

The day I felt scared running was one of those days when everything takes longer than you expect and my run got pushed back later and later in the day until I was finally lacing up my shoes long after the sun had already set. I sent a quick text letting my husband know where I was running and set off into the dark. Any time I run at night I have my senses on full alert and this was no different, searching around every corner for possible cars that might fail to see me, looking for wildlife but mostly being very much aware of what I can’t see and what might wait for me in the shadows. I can finally share a secret with you. For the last four months I have been training for a marathon, not just any marathon though – the Marathon of Afghanistan. (see article here) I couldn’t have done it without the amazing coaching of Martin Parnell

I chose to run and to film this marathon because I wanted to support the courageous young Afghan women who are putting their lives on the line to be a voice for equality in their country. They are making history. This is one of the most important stories I have ever told and I need a community to help me get this film across the finish line. We would love to have you be part of our community.
